Service-business search lead economics connect a company’s own high-intent visits, visitor-to-lead rate, close rate, gross profit per customer, and monthly marketing cost. This calculator turns those inputs into one transparent planning scenario. The accompanying DataForSEO search-volume and Google Ads CPC fields provide market context only; they do not forecast traffic, leads, customers, or ROI.

Foundgrove assumptions

Compare the scenario with an SEO budget band

The retained budget estimator applies Foundgrove's own published prices and internal scope bands. Its industry adjustment is a Foundgrove estimator assumption only—not a vendor benchmark, a CPC-derived price, or a quote.

Estimated monthly SEO budget

$2,500–$3,500 /month

This is a Foundgrove estimator assumption applied to your selections, not a quote. Published retainers are month-to-month with no lock-in. See the full pricing page or get a free site teardown for a number based on your actual site.

Foundgrove estimator assumptions: bands anchor to published rates — SEO from $2,500/mo, scaling to $10,000+/mo for competitive verticals or multi-location operations, and $8,500–$25,000 one-time for website builds. Full explanation in how this calculator works.

How was the search-demand dataset assembled?

Foundgrove transformed one DataForSEO Labs Google Keyword Overview pull into the public CSV without combining keyword variants, rounding numeric fields, or filling vendor-null CPC cells. Monthly search volume, CPC, competition, source update time, competition level, and latest-month observation remain separate fields.

The latest-month observation in notes provides the vendor's dated monthly-series context. It is not added to monthly search volume. Retrieval date records when Foundgrove received the dataset, while source update time is the timestamp or date returned for that keyword.

Transparent arithmetic

Which formulas power the planning scenario?

The calculator applies the following equations in order. Google Ads Help defines ROI as a ratio of net profit to cost and recommends assigning conversion values that match a business's real objectives; this page uses gross profit per customer as the value input rather than importing a market benchmark.

  1. Leads = high-intent visits × visitor-to-lead rate.
  2. Customers = leads × lead-to-customer rate.
  3. Gross profit = customers × gross profit per customer.
  4. Net return = gross profit − monthly marketing cost.
  5. ROI = net return ÷ monthly marketing cost × 100. At zero cost, ROI stays undefined.
  6. Break-even cost per lead = gross profit ÷ leads. At zero leads, the result is zero.

Use boundaries

What can this resource not tell you?

  • The dataset does not forecast rankings, organic traffic, leads, customers, bookings, revenue, or profit.
  • Google Ads average CPC is paid-search context—not cost per lead, customer value, an SEO fee, or channel performance.
  • Search volume is a vendor estimate for the listed keyword and location; it is not a count of buyers available to one business.
  • The calculator does not model capacity, refunds, repeat purchases, attribution lag, taxes, overhead, or cash-flow timing.
  • The budget estimator applies Foundgrove assumptions and published price bands. It is not a quote.
  • Every calculated output changes when an entered assumption changes. Replace assumptions with consistent measured data before making a decision.

Budget-estimator methodology

How does the SEO budget estimator work?

The budget estimator applies Foundgrove's published pricing model to its three selections. Retainers start at $2,500/month on the Growth tier and scale to $10,000+/month for competitive verticals or multi-location operations; those two published anchors set the bottom and top bands. Service area moves you between bands because scope drives content volume and local-signal work. The industry selection moves law, dental, and med spa into an adjacent planning band under a Foundgrove estimator assumption. No CPC field causes or validates that adjustment.

The estimate is deliberately a range, not a number. A real quote depends on your site's condition and your market — which is why the honest next step is a free teardown of your actual site rather than a bigger form. For the full narrative of what drives SEO pricing — hidden costs and tier-by-tier detail — read our complete guide to what SEO costs a service business.

The model, in the open

What the calculator will tell you

The full Foundgrove assumption table the budget estimator draws from. Service area sets the row; law, dental, and med spa use the adjacent planning row under the estimator's disclosed internal classification:

Service areaStandard verticalFoundgrove scope-intensive assumption
One city or metro$2,500–$3,500/mo$3,000–$5,000/mo
Several cities$3,000–$5,000/mo$4,000–$7,500/mo
Statewide$4,000–$7,500/mo$5,000–$10,000/mo
Multi-state or national$5,000–$10,000/mo$5,000–$10,000+/mo

A site that needs rebuilding adds $8,500–$25,000 one-time — Foundgrove's published fixed-fee range for a conversion-focused build. The estimator selection does not establish that a specific site needs a rebuild; that requires a scope review.

Benchmarks

What does SEO cost per month in 2026?

Monthly retainers are the dominant model — 78.2% of SEOs charge one, per Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers. What that retainer costs varies by who you hire and where they are:

BenchmarkFigureSource

"SEO costs usually range from $250 to $10,000 per month, with most businesses (63%) spending between $500 and $5,000."

Two caveats worth knowing: US-based services cost 3–5x more than providers in emerging markets (Backlinko), and SE Ranking's authors note their 260-agency sample may not reach statistical significance — treat every survey band as a range, not a rule.

Comparison

Published agency rates, compared

Survey averages hide a practical problem: most agencies never print a number. We checked the rate pages agencies actually publish (all fetched August 2026) — and SE Ranking's survey explains why retainers dominate the cards that do exist: "53% of survey participants prefer monthly retainers over all other pricing models" (Svitlana Shchehel, SE Ranking).

Worth knowing before you compare: two of the highest-ranking "SEO cost" guides — HigherVisibility's and OuterBox's — publish only industry survey averages on those pages, not their own rates (both fetched August 2026), and Victorious' on-site pricing page was offline when we checked, leaving its G2-listed tiers as the published record. A rate card you can read before the sales call is itself a signal of how an agency treats scope.

Hourly

How much does SEO cost per hour?

$75–$100 per hour is the most common SEO rate — 24% of providers land there — and the overall average is $111/hour, with 1 in 10 charging more than $150 (Ahrefs, 439 providers). Experience moves the number more than anything else: Backlinko's survey places entry practitioners at $50–$100/hour, senior specialists at $101–$150, and experts at $151–$200+, with rates climbing roughly $15–$25/hour per experience step for the first decade.

Hourly billing suits diagnosis, not delivery: a technical audit, a migration consult, a one-off fix. A full ranking program bought by the hour turns every month into a negotiation — which is why 78.2% of the market bills retainers instead. The seniority effect is not anecdote: "Our data shows a near-linear relationship between years of experience and hourly rates" (Backlinko).

Project

How much does project-based SEO cost?

$2,501–$5,000 is the most common one-off project band — 21.2% of providers price there (Ahrefs) — though the market's cheap end is wide: SE Ranking's 260-agency survey found 66% of project fees land between $500 and $2,000, and only 18% above $3,000. WebFX frames the same spread as $500–$5,000 per project.

The scope is what you are buying: a defined deliverable — an audit with a fix roadmap, a migration, a content build — with a start and an end. Work that has no end (rankings, links, AI citations) does not fit a project fee, which is the boundary between this table and the retainer bands above it.

Who you hire

How do provider type and business size change the number?

The same scope costs different money from different desks. Freelancers average $1,348.63/month against an agency average of $3,209/month (Ahrefs), and US-based services run 3–5x the price of providers in emerging markets (Backlinko) — a gap that buys accountability, native-market judgment, and seniority, or buys nothing, depending on the desk. Business size sets the other axis: WebFX's published ranges run $500–$1,500/month for a micro business, $1,500–$3,500 for a small business, $1,500–$10,000 mid-market, and $10,000–$50,000+ at enterprise scale.

Build or buy

What about hiring in-house instead?

An in-house SEO specialist averages $67,388–$80,670 a year in the US (ZipRecruiter, Aug 2026 / Indeed, 888 posted salaries), and an SEO manager $86,206–$89,098 — that is $5,600–$6,700 a month in specialist salary alone, before benefits and tools (the BLS puts private-industry total compensation at $46.60/hour against $32.60/hour in wages). One hire also buys one skill set, where a program needs several: technical, content, links, local.

The full build-or-buy decision — including when in-house genuinely wins — is its own comparison: in-house SEO vs agency vs freelancer. For cost purposes the short version is: below roughly the cost of half a hire, an agency or senior freelancer is the only way to get the full skill stack.

Tiers

SEO pricing packages: what changes as the price goes up

Packages differ less in what they list and more in execution volume. Reading any agency's tiers — including Foundgrove's published tiers — what moves with price is:

  1. Content volume — how many pages and articles ship per month, and whether they are written by industry-experienced writers or templated.
  2. Link acquisition — whether earned links are included at all; this is the single most common gap in sub-$1,000 packages.
  3. Scope of surfaces — classic rankings only, or also Google Business Profile, AI Overviews, and answer-engine citations.
  4. Who does the work — a senior strategist or a junior account layer; agencies charge 138% more than freelancers on average (Ahrefs), and part of that gap is real seniority.

Buyer protection

Red flags in SEO pricing

The pricing itself tells you how an engagement will go. Five patterns to walk away from:

  1. A guaranteed ranking attached to a price. Nobody controls Google; a guarantee is a sales device, not a deliverable.
  2. A long lock-in with vague monthly scope. The compared rate cards above show month-to-month exists at every price point — a 12-month contract with undefined deliverables shifts all the risk to you.
  3. The agency keeps your assets. If content, the site, or the Google Business Profile stays theirs when you leave, the retainer was rent, not investment.
  4. Reporting that stops at rankings. A report that never reaches calls, forms, and booked work is priced against the wrong outcome.
  5. A price with no scope attached — in either direction. Backlinko's own red-flag list includes unusually cheap pricing relative to other quotes (Backlinko); a number that can't explain what ships each month is a red flag at $500 and at $5,000.

AI search

How much does GEO / AI-search optimization cost?

Standalone AI-visibility optimization — getting recommended by AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity — averages $937/month as a separate service (SE Ranking's agency survey). It is the newest line on agency rate cards, and the pricing is still settling: most agencies either fold it into an SEO retainer or sell it as an add-on.

Foundgrove takes the first path — GEO and AEO are part of the $2,500/month retainer, because the work shares its foundations with SEO. For businesses whose priority is specifically AI citations, the dedicated generative engine optimization service runs it as its own program with AI-visibility tracking.

Local

How much does local SEO cost?

Local SEO averages $1,557/month (Ahrefs) — the least expensive professional tier, because the battleground is one metro's map pack rather than a national SERP. If your business serves a single service area, that is the spend that moves first: Google Business Profile categories and services, review velocity, citation consistency, and pages for the towns you actually serve.

At Foundgrove, local SEO is not sold separately — GBP optimization, citation cleanup, and local content are part of every service-area retainer, which is why the calculator's single-metro band starts at the retainer floor rather than adding a local surcharge.

Search Lead Economics FAQ

What are search lead economics?

Search lead economics are a planning model that connects high-intent visits to leads, customers, gross profit, cost, net return, ROI, and break-even cost per lead. The useful inputs come from the business using the model, not from the vendor CPC table.

Is the calculator a forecast or a quote?

No. It is a user-input planning scenario, not a ranking, traffic, lead, customer, profit, revenue, or ROI forecast and not a Foundgrove quote. Change an input to see how that assumption changes the arithmetic.

Which values should I measure instead of guess?

Use measured high-intent search visits, completed lead actions, qualified leads that became customers, gross profit per acquired customer, and total monthly search marketing cost. Keep the period and definitions consistent across all five inputs.

What does CPC mean in the dataset?

CPC is the DataForSEO vendor field for Google Ads average cost per click on the listed keyword in the United States. It is paid-search market context—not cost per lead, customer value, an SEO price, or evidence that one channel will outperform another.

Why is ROI blank when marketing cost is zero?

The scenario leaves ROI undefined when monthly marketing cost is zero because dividing net return by zero is not valid. Leads, customers, gross profit, net return, and break-even cost per lead can still be displayed.

How should a med spa use this resource?

A med spa can enter its own search and business inputs here, then request Foundgrove’s free Search Demand & Booking Opportunity Map for a public-surface diagnostic. Neither tool promises rankings, consultations, bookings, or revenue.

Wondering what the cheap end of the market actually delivers? Our breakdown of what $500/month SEO really includes pairs with this page, and our source-cited SEO statistics hold the wider 2026 numbers these benchmarks sit inside. When the planning scenario is ready to become an operating plan, review Foundgrove's service-business SEO program.
