Click-to-Message Ads: Meta's Best Format for Trades

Summary

Click-to-message ads open a Messenger or Instagram DM instead of a form. Here is the greeting, qualifying script and routing build that makes them pay.

Your lead form is leaking. Someone with a flooded basement taps your ad, gets a form asking for name, email, phone and 'how can we help?', and bails at field two because water is coming up through the tile.

A click-to-message ad removes the form. The button opens a chat thread instead — and the prospect is now in a channel you can answer in seconds, on a device that pings them when you reply.

It is also the fastest way to build an inbox nobody watches. Here's the honest version: what the format is, how to build the greeting and qualifying flow, who has to answer, how attribution actually works, and which trades should not touch it.

What is a click-to-message ad, and where does the lead land?

A click-to-message ad is a Meta ad whose call-to-action opens a conversation in Messenger, Instagram Direct or WhatsApp, and the lead lands in your message inbox — not your CRM, not a spreadsheet, not your email.

In Meta's Marketing API, a click-to-message ad sets destination_type to MESSENGER, WHATSAPP or INSTAGRAM_DIRECT and optimizes for CONVERSATIONS. Meta's own messaging ads documentation describes the result plainly: messaging ads 'send people who click on your ads directly into conversations with your business in Messenger, Instagram, and/or WhatsApp.'

Do not confuse it with website ads that click to message, a separate product where the ad still opens your website in an in-app browser and drops a messaging button in a footer. That one uses destination_type: WEBSITE and treats chat as a secondary exit. Different product, different reporting.

Two limitations Meta states in the click-to-Messenger docs that vendor blog posts skip: a person must have Messenger installed on their device to see the ad, and there is no support for right-side placements. You are buying mobile feed and Stories inventory, aimed at people already carrying the app.

Why do messaging ads beat lead forms for emergency trades?

Because response speed decides the sale, and a thread collapses the gap. In a 2011 Harvard Business Review study, firms that contacted an online lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify that lead — defined as having a meaningful conversation with a key decision maker — as firms that waited just one hour longer, and more than 60 times as likely as firms that waited 24 hours or more.

A lead form hands you a phone number and starts a game of tag. A message thread hands you an open channel with the prospect's notifications already on. They can answer you at a red light. They can send a photo of the leaking valve.

Meta also ships a call prompt for this exact job. In its October 2023 announcement, Meta called Click-to-Message + Call Prompt 'Meta's first ad product to drive Messenger calls from consumers to a brand's Facebook page' — you set landing_screen_type to call_prompt and the thread opens with a call button on top. For a burst pipe, that is the whole funnel.

None of this matters if you answer in four hours. The format buys you speed; it does not create it. Read our speed-to-lead breakdown before you fund the campaign.

Should a US business use WhatsApp, Messenger, or Instagram DM?

For a US service business, Messenger first and Instagram Direct second — because Pew Research Center's Social Media Fact Sheet, from a survey of 5,022 US adults conducted February 5 to June 18, 2025, puts WhatsApp usage at 32% of US adults against 71% for Facebook and 50% for Instagram.

Most click-to-WhatsApp content you will read was written for markets where WhatsApp is the default phone dialer. That is not the United States. Run click-to-WhatsApp here only if you know your customers are on it — cross-border, immigrant-heavy, or trade-to-trade books of business.

DestinationUS reach (Pew, 2025)Attribution hookThe catch
MessengerFacebook: 71% of US adultsPage-scoped ID (PSID) sent via Conversions APIAd only serves to people with Messenger installed
Instagram DirectInstagram: 50% of US adultsInstagram-scoped ID (IGSID)Meta says purchase optimization is 'not available for Instagram ad optimization at this time'
WhatsAppWhatsApp: 32% of US adultsctwa_clid, unique per ad clickRoughly two-thirds of US adults never use it; reach is well below Messenger
MultidestinationMeta picks the app the person is most likely to reply inSame per-channel hooksThree inboxes to staff instead of one

Verdict: start with Messenger as the single destination. Add Instagram Direct only if you actually post to that account and someone checks it. Multidestination sounds efficient and quietly triples your staffing problem.

What automated greeting and questions do you need before you launch?

A greeting, three icebreaker questions and a disqualify path — and Meta caps icebreaker titles at 80 characters, icebreaker responses at 300, and message text at 300, so you are writing tight.

Meta's click-to-Messenger docs say the default first message a customer sees is 'Hello! Can I get more info on this?'. Ship that and you have built a slot machine. You customize the greeting, icebreakers and autofill messages in the page_welcome_message field on the ad creative — this is the single highest-leverage field in the whole build.

The qualifying sequence for a trade is three questions: what, where, when. Nothing else. Every extra question is a field on a form you just told everyone you removed.

Greeting'Hi, this is Acme Plumbing. Tell us what's going on and we'll get you a time today.'
Q1 (what)Icebreaker buttons: 'Drain / sewer backup' · 'No hot water' · 'Leak or burst pipe' · 'Something else'
Q2 (where)'What ZIP are you in?' — Meta supports answer validation on zip code, city, email and phone number
Q3 (when)'Emergency today' · 'This week' · 'Just getting a price' — the third answer is your disqualify branch, not a lead
Confirmation'Got it. A dispatcher is on this now — you'll hear from us on this thread in a few minutes.'

Meta's lead-template structure mirrors that exactly: steps typed as INTRO, QUESTION, CONFIRMATION and DISQUALIFY, with disqualifying questions used 'to prioritize the most qualified leads.' Two operational traps in the docs — message templates cannot be edited or deleted once created (so draft in a doc first, name them by date), and from API v24.0 Meta deprecated creating Messenger lead ads through the API, so build the template in Ads Manager.

This is the part agencies skip, and it is the part that decides whether the money works. If you want the build audited before you spend, that is what our paid ads program does — month to month, no lock-in.

Who answers the inbox, and how fast do they have to be?

One named person per shift, answering in minutes — not the one-hour outer bound from the HBR research, which is the point at which qualification odds have already collapsed sevenfold.

The failure mode is boring and universal. The ads run, threads open, and the Meta Business Suite inbox lives on an office desktop nobody logs into after 4pm. An unwatched message thread is worse than a form: the prospect saw a live chat interface, got nothing back, and now knows what your service looks like.

Route it to the phone the dispatcher actually holds. Install Meta Business Suite on that device, turn on message notifications, and assign the thread like you'd assign a truck. If nights are unstaffed, say so in the greeting and capture the number: 'We're out until 7am — drop your number and address and you're first on the board.'

Then hold the standard. Pull cost per conversation weekly against jobs actually booked, and if 90 days of spend produces no qualified work, kill it. That is the 90-day kill switch we apply to every channel, and it applies here too — see the Meta ads guide for how the rest of the account should be structured around it.

How do you attribute a booked job back to a message thread?

You pass a conversion event back to Meta carrying the thread's identifier — ctwa_clid on WhatsApp, PSID on Messenger, IGSID on Instagram — through the Conversions API for Business Messaging, with action_source set to business_messaging.

Meta's Conversions API for Business Messaging guide lists the supported messaging events, and the ones that matter to a trade are QualifiedLead, LeadSubmitted and Purchase. Fire QualifiedLead when the three questions come back clean, and Purchase with the invoice value when the job closes. That is how the algorithm learns which conversations are worth buying.

Now the honest downside, because threads are genuinely messier to report on than forms. Meta states in the same guide that it 'does not assist with deduplicating events' for business messaging — that is on you. And purchase optimization is available for ads that click to Messenger and WhatsApp only, not Instagram.

If a full Conversions API build is beyond your stack today, use the manual version: tag the job source in your CRM at intake, reconcile weekly against Ads Manager, and treat cost per conversation as a diagnostic — never as your business metric. A cheap conversation that never becomes a truck roll is not a win, it is noise.

Which trades should not run click-to-message ads?

Anything with a long consideration cycle, a compliance-heavy intake, or a quote that requires a site visit before a number exists — full roof replacements, kitchen remodels, solar, and law firms are better served by a call, a booked appointment, or a real landing page.

TradeRun click-to-message?Why
Plumbing / drain emergencyYes — primary formatUrgency plus a photo of the problem beats any form
Garage door repairYesPhoto of the door and opener model qualifies the job in one message
Junk removalYesPhoto-based quoting is the entire sales process
Auto repairYesSymptom plus year/make/model routes straight to a bay slot
HVAC replacementOnly for repair callsInstall quotes need a load calc and a home visit, not a DM
Roofing replacementNoInsurance and inspection cycles need a booked appointment
Law firm intakeNoConflict checks and confidentiality do not belong in a Meta thread

The other hard disqualifier is staffing. If nobody owns the inbox during business hours, do not run this format — run a call-only campaign or a landing page and let the phone do the work. The format is a promise of speed, and you cannot break it twice.

What are the most common questions about this topic?

Common questions readers send us about this topic.

What are click-to-message ads on Facebook?

They are Meta ads whose call-to-action opens a conversation with your business instead of a landing page. In Meta's Marketing API they set a messaging destination — MESSENGER, INSTAGRAM_DIRECT or WHATSAPP — and optimize for CONVERSATIONS, so the person who taps your ad is sent straight into a chat thread. The lead arrives in your message inbox, not a form submission, which means someone has to be there to answer it.

Do click-to-WhatsApp ads work in the United States?

Usually not well, because the audience is thinner. Pew Research Center's Social Media Fact Sheet, based on a survey of 5,022 US adults conducted February 5 to June 18, 2025, puts WhatsApp usage at 32% of US adults, against 71% for Facebook and 50% for Instagram. Most click-to-WhatsApp playbooks were written for markets where WhatsApp is the default messenger. In the US, run Messenger first unless you know your specific customer base lives on WhatsApp.

How do I set up an automated greeting for messaging ads?

You customize the greeting, icebreakers and autofill messages in the page_welcome_message field on the ad creative. Meta's docs note the default customer-facing message is a generic 'Hello! Can I get more info on this?' — replace it. Keep icebreaker titles under 80 characters and any message text under 300, which are Meta's stated limits, and use three icebreakers that ask what the job is, where it is, and when they need it.

Are messaging leads cheaper than form leads?

Cost per conversation is usually lower than cost per form lead, but it is not the same unit and comparing them directly will mislead you. A conversation is an opened thread, not a qualified job. Judge messaging ads on cost per booked job by firing QualifiedLead and Purchase events back through the Conversions API for Business Messaging, or by tagging the source in your CRM at intake and reconciling weekly.

How do I track conversions from Messenger ads?

Use the Conversions API for Business Messaging. It carries the thread identifier — PSID for Messenger, IGSID for Instagram, ctwa_clid for WhatsApp — back to Meta with an action_source of business_messaging, and supports events including QualifiedLead, LeadSubmitted and Purchase. Two caveats from Meta's own guide: it does not deduplicate messaging events for you, and purchase optimization is available for Messenger and WhatsApp but not for Instagram ads.

Which service businesses get the most from click-to-message ads?

Emergency and quick-quote trades: plumbing and drain work, garage door repair, junk removal, and auto repair. What they share is a job that can be qualified from a photo and three questions, plus urgency that makes an instant reply worth money. Long-cycle, site-visit-first work — roof replacement, remodels, solar, legal intake — converts better through a call, a booked appointment, or a landing page.

Do I need Messenger installed for the ads to show?

Your customer does. Meta's click-to-Messenger documentation states that a person must have Messenger installed on their device to see the ad, and that right-side placements are not supported. Practically, that means you are buying mobile feed and Stories inventory aimed at people already carrying the app, and your reach will be smaller than a standard traffic or lead-form campaign targeting the same geography.
